Legacies of the West Premier Edition
This piece was inspired by Chief Joseph's words, spoken on October 5, 1877, when he surrendered to Colonel Nelson Miles. Miles had caught up with Joseph and his band of Nez Percé in the Bear Paw Mountains, forty miles from Canada and freedom. "...I want to have time to look for my children and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more, forever."
